The goal of this
charrette was to provide Shenandoah Valley officials
with specific strategies for financing land conservation
efforts. The day focused on Open Space and Agricultural
Land Preservation.

Review of Conservation
Efforts in Virginia – David Carter, TPL
This session examined
details on how some communities in Virginia and
nationwide finance their land protection programs.
Financing Tools for
Creating a Sustainable Program - Pat O'Connell,
Evergreen Capital: Discussion in this
session addressed a broad range of financing tools and
different methods available to finance land protection
programs in communities.
Maintaining the Rural
Base of the Shenandoah Region
The Panel helped the
community identify ways to build support and means for
protecting the land base and the rural heritage it
sustains.
Developing a Financing
Plan for Your Community
Counties broke into
groups and met to put together an outline of land
conservation financing plans for their counties.
Panelists were assigned to each group to assist with
questions and concerns.
Group Reporting and
Evaluation
Each team summarized
their responses from the break out session, and Dan Nees
lead a review and discussion of responses with input
from the panelists.
Regional
Recommendations for State Efforts
Groups and panelist
discussed ways that to enhance Virginia’s land
protection efforts.
Discussion of Next
Steps
Dan Nees summed up the
afternoon’s accomplishments and described what type of
continued assistance the group can anticipate.
