Alternative Approach to Sustainable Agriculture

Hudson Valley Agribusiness Development Corporation (non-profit) was formed in late 2006 to help sustain the agricultural heritage of four counties in the Hudson River Valley of New York.  They have an executive director who performs many of the duties that a county agricultural development director would do, such as development, promotion, enhancement and retention of the agricultural industry.  They have focused on production agriculture, value-added food processing, agricultural marketing and distribution, agricultural-related alternative energy production, agricultural tourism, agricultural biotechnology and related research.  The four counties provide base funding for salary, office space and supplies and in addition, a number of other revenue sources have been developed to support activities.  The Executive Director Todd Erling is on an RC&D Council and is very familiar with what we do.

The Shenandoah RC&D Council provided funding and coordinate a visit to our RC&D Area by Todd Erling; we arranged appointments for Todd to meet (hosted by Shenandoah RC&D) with county officials, agricultural interests and others to explain the Hudson Valley approach, answer questions, and open discussions about using this cooperative, multi-county, approach to agricultural development (as opposed to each county ‘doing its own thing’).
