A new farmers market in Waynesboro will open next month at the
pavilion in Constitution Park.
“The mission of this market is
to support sustainable agriculture and provide a weekly event
for downtown Waynesboro,” said Jim Nichols, the chairman of the
farmers market committee.
The market, he said, is designed not to conflict with other
farmers markets in the region. It will be open Wednesdays
beginning April 23 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“We arrived at that date after a lot of research,” Nichols
said. “We don’t want to compete with other markets.”
Besides providing fresh local produce, organizers plan to
provide entertainment and children’s activities.
The committee of volunteers, under the umbrella of Waynesboro
Downtown Development,Inc., has been meeting since September.
Startup money for the market comes from a grant through the
nonprofit Resource Conservation District Council.
Nichols said the committee is still working through the
logistics of the farmers market, and it is still looking for
vendors.
He said there had been a previous market here until about three
years ago, and said now was the time to bring the market back to
the city.
“I did think it was worth pursuing to put another market on
the ground,” Nichols said.
