Project Activity

 

Rural Economic Vitality: 

  • Met with Joan Comanor and Susie Hill July 26 to discuss Shenandoah County Ag Task Force
  • Attended second annual organic no-till field day in Blacksburg Aug. 11
  • Teleconferences scheduled for Aug. 17 and Sept. 8
  • Began planning for fall workshop on strengthening/starting local farmer’s markets

Open Space, Forestry, and Farmland Preservation and Community Development: 

  • Sent comprehensive list to Bob Blair, Volunteer Farm executive director, and Lee Jette, board member, a list of potential grant opportunities for them to follow up on.
  • Teleconference Aug. 26 with Environmental Finance Center/ECA re: workshop/proposal
  • Attended VCC Land Protection Committee meeting August 12
  • Attended Volunteer Farm event Saturday, August 13.

Water Quality/Quantity:

  • Attended 3 “Fish Kill” conference/task force related meetings; conference Oct. 24&25 JMU
  • Met with Dennis Cupp, manager of the Rockingham County Fair, to discuss potential storm water management project at fairgrounds; toured fairgrounds.
  • Committee teleconference August 26
  • Attended Chesapeake Bay Foundation-led meeting on “meaningful” watershed experience Sept.1

Nutrient Management:

  • Met July 29, August 5, August 16, and Sept. 6, Waste Solutions Forum follow-up committees and steering committee for project and grant opportunities follow up.
  • Met with “scales” project partners to follow up on project, stenciling, scheduling, forms, etc.
  • Met with Nutrient Management committee August 1 to review goals and objectives

Education and Information:

  • Met with Education Committee and Rural Vitality via teleconference Sept. 8
  • Worked with a variety of people to put together proposals for Council consideration

 

Grants/Funding

  • Met with Joan Comanor and Agua Fund representative to review last year’s Council projects and discuss potential project funding for 2005/6
  • Submitted pre-proposal to Sand County Foundation
  • Researched grants for Volunteer Farm

 

NRCS Activities

  • PRS reporting July, August and September
  • Worked with Joan Comanor on planning for Area Plan update
  • Mandatory Civil Rights and Computer Security Basics courses completed
  • Attended coordinator’s training in SW Virginia August 23-25
  • Attended SE Association of RC&D Councils meeting in Orlando Sept. 7-10

 

Other

  • Headwaters SWCD meeting July 19
  • Met with Jeff Casale, reporter from DNR, about RC&D activities July 13
  • Two press releases sent out on Farming 101 and Local Producer’s Guide
  • August 18 Executive Committee meeting to discuss Area Plan/At-large members
  • Created PowerPoint for New Council Members training
  • Lorraine returns from six weeks of medical leave
