Project Activity

Rural Economic Vitality: 

  • Final report received from Pete Bsumek’s JMU class on how to get locally-produced foods into JMU cafeterias for class project
  • Met with Back Door Butcher re: food network/coop Augusta County May 19
  • Met with committee via teleconference for Annual Plan input May 24
  • Met with steering committee to discuss local foods in local institutions June 30 at VCE

Open Space, Forestry, and Farmland Preservation and Community Development:

·        Numerous calls/organizing appointments for “Leadership Dialogues” with cities/counties in our service region.  All day dialogues May 10, June 14, June 30.

·        Met with committee via teleconference for Annual Plan input June 8

Water Quality/Quantity:

  • Met with committee via teleconference for Annual Plan input June 12

Nutrient Management:

  • Met with committee via teleconference for Annual Plan input June 6
  • Waste Solutions Forum Steering Committee June 15; coop committee June 15; Kathy and Eric Bendfeldt elected new co-chairs for 06/07.
  • Met with WSF Poultry Litter Transport Committee June 16

Education and Information:

  • Met with committee via teleconference for Annual Plan input June 6
  • Biodiesel for Municipal and County Fleets workshop completed June 30; lots of publicity and attendance; phone calls; ordered food, copied handouts, agenda, etc.  Met with Jim Nichols/Lorraine to iron out details June 12.

Grants/Funding

  • AWARDED $12,500 Keith Campbell Foundation grant for Waste Solutions Forum intern
  • AWARDED 3rd year Agua Fund grant for sustainable agriculture $55,000
  • Met with Larry Elworth re: CBF network funding in Valley May 25
  • Talked with Agua Fund Cecily Kihn May 11; June 16 re: CBF network visit to Valley; helped with arrangements
  • Attended check presentation to Waste Solutions Forum June 2 in Rockingham County

NRCS Activities

  • Teleconference with RC&D Coordinators on June 1
  • Still working hard! on State NRCS webpage for RC&D program in VA
  • POINTS training (new RC&D database) June 7
  • Attended National Association of RC&D National meeting June 18-22
  • Attended “How to become an Effective Supervisor” training in Richmond June 26-29

Other

  • Lorraine annual leave: July 13-25
  • Kathy annual leave: August 7-20
  • Kathy NRCS coordinators’ meeting: August 1-3
  • SE Assoc.: Agua Fund won best supporting organization
  • May 15 VARCDC teleconference
