Coordinator’s Report

Project Activity

 

Rural Economic Vitality: 

  • Worked with Diane Kearns to bring forward Winchester City Market Proposal.
  • Committee meeting May 5 to discuss above proposal.
  • Worked with Charles Curry, chair, Augusta County Ag Task Force, to present information on RC&D grant to the task force on May 19.  Rick Shiflet will be the project liaison and will present the information.
  • Worked on MOU for Augusta Task Force

 

Open Space, Forestry, and Farmland Preservation and Community Development: 

  • Held easement workshop in Shenandoah County April 14, approximately 65 people attended.
  • Held April 19 “Options for Financing Local Purchase of Development Rights Programs” at Augusta County Government Center, approximately 75 participants.
  • Met with Sandy Greene re: future proposal to the committee on farm tourism.
  • Met with Bob Blair, Volunteer Farm executive director, to discuss how RC&D might assist his efforts.
  • Met with committee April 19 to discuss and modify Volunteer Farm proposal.

 

Water Quality/Quantity

  • Submitted grant to DCR for reallocated 319 funds for the Fitch Individual Sewage Project.

 

Nutrient Management

  • Met with Committee April 6 to hear two presentations on potential projects:  Dr. Foster Agblevor on Pyrodiesel and Claude Nuckols on Biomass Combustor.  Sent out appropriate letters of intent and follow-up to presenters.
  • Continued extensive work with Waste Solutions Forum Steering Committee, met in Charlottesville March 25 and teleconference April 15, to take care of last minute details prior to the Forum.
  • Worked on MOU with Headwaters, DCR, VT Cooperative Extension, for scales project.
  • Attended Waste Solutions Forum April 28-29.

 

Education and Information

  • Worked with Lorraine to keep RC&D website current.  Added information about latest events.

 

Grants/Funding

  • Submitted proposal to DCR for reallocated 319 funding for Fitch sewage project.
  • Worked with CVI to do projects related to Waste Solutions Forum follow up through EPA grant CVI is submitting.

 

NRCS Activities

  • Participated in coordinator’s teleconference April 20
  • Lorraine’s mid-year review
  • Preparations for USDA Civil Rights Review
  • Servicing van, oil change, etc.

 

Virginia Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils

  • Drafted Legislative Committee report for Spring meeting and edited Forestry report
  • Forestry committee teleconference April 13
  • Made reservations/registered for spring VARCDC meeting in Petersburg – 2 Council members attending plus coordinator

 

Other

  • Presentation to 20 Master Gardeners in Clarke County about Council and activities March 30
  • Put up RC&D display for Black’s Run Clean up Day in Harrisonburg April 9
  • Presentation on RC&D Council to about 20 members of the Regional Water Resources Policy Committee in Shenandoah County on April 20
  • Met with reporter Jeff Casale April 25 (phone) about future RC&D article in Harrisonburg DNR.
  • Presentation on Farmland Conservation for Area I SWCD meeting in Lexington April 26, approximately 65 people.
  • Participated in free GIS training April 15 afternoon at JMU.
