Joan M. Comanor, RC&D Chair, Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District, retired from the federal government in 2003 after a 30 year career that concentrated on natural resources management. She worked for the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management for 11 years, USDA Forest Service for 12 years, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service for 7 years where she was a senior executive responsible for the Resource Conservation and Development Program, among other activities. She became an associate director and then director of the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District shortly after retirement. She graduated from the University of Nevada-Reno with a bachelor’s degree and advance study in natural resources management. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, she lived in Paris, France; Reno, Nevada; and Washington, DC area before retiring to the Shenandoah Valley. She is active in several professional and civic organizations, and owns 34 acres of woodland and an old farmhouse outside of Woodstock. |
